After much research and speaking with the IRS, we have found that starting a church is very easy. Most church plants today think they need 501c3 status. Many also think they need to become a corporation. In fact, if you want to plant a church, you don't need either of these. Through our findings, we had to ask ourselves...do we really want to be controlled by the government? Check out this video to learn 3 easy steps to start a church. Step 1: Apply for an EIN on the IRS.gov website: www.irs.gov Step 2: Keep your organizing documents in a file folder. Organizing documents can include the church bylaws, rules, etc. These files must be printed out and kept in a file folder at the church location. Step 3: Contact your state government for any additional requirements that you may need to address. According to the IRS, to be classified as a church you must be organized having the following: 1.
